Let’s start with Australia day. Sure, we had Fosters (we bought all of the Coopers), ladies cooked and there were hamburgers (oh yeah, opposite land) but it was a tonne of fun. Looking forward to next years celebration already.

That’s one think I’ve picked up along the way. Holidays. Americans celebrate every holiday and the supermarkets don’t let you forget it. I think I’m going to run by a new calendar that isn’t dictated by months, but just holidays. At the moment, it’s Valentines-uary, soon enough it will be St Patricks-uary, I’m really looking forward to October-ween and Turkey-vember!

A couple of weeks ago we got invited to got to Hicksville in Joshua Tree. It was ridiculous fun and we’ll definitely head out there again. The place is fairly new but soon to be wildly popular.

If that’s not all, we’ve been treated to warm weather in the mid to high 20′s for over a week now. It’s the middle of Winter. MIDDLE OF WINTER!

PS We’ve also started Spanish lessons. Hola!

It seemed pretty quiet on the waterfront, but we walked a bit and eventually found some people along the foreshore. Some random let us in a 10 second countdown to midnight, everyone got pretty excited…except there were no fireworks. Boooooooo!

Anyway, 2011 is going to be a good one.

We gave egg nog a go for the first time (after a few phone calls and chats in the supermarket about how to drink it). Didn’t think I’d like it…it’s called egg nog after all, I’ve never found it to be an appetising sounding drink. Well, it wasn’t bad at all. Here’s a handy tip, have it hot and in a small cup, not a gigantic one like you see in the pic below. Oh, and definitely add brandy and a cinnamon stick. It doesn’t taste eggy, it’s more like custard with spice and booze.

I was pretty excited about these Christmas tree chocolate covered pretzles. They were pretty stale and gross. Bummer.

Made sure we had some Martinelli’s on hand. A holiday staple here.

The tree is still up. I think we’ll give it until new years. Seems to be holding up ok.

We got our first real Christmas tree last week. OK, I’ve had a real one once before, but nothing like this. A nice 6 foot noble pine. I really felt for the people at Home Depot working the Christmas tree lot. They’ve got a big section of trees, all different kinds and sizes. They’re wrapped up with string to keep their shape, you pick one out, they cut the string off and give it a good shake and bash the trunk on the ground to get all of the loose needles out.

It was hot (for winter, almost 30 celcius) and you could see a bunch of trees had already been opened. You could just see that there were customers making the staff open tree after tree that was too tall, too short, not skinny enough, not full enough. I guess Christmas is serious business, you can tell by the insane light shows people decorate their houses in.

Since Sanch bought us the Santa Pez and Skiing hot dog, we’ve decided to collect funny tree decorations. So if anyone comes to visit us…you have to bring us something for the tree.

Basketball on Friday, the Aztecs draw a decent crowd, something that we don’t see back home, people barely go to the NBL let alone watch a uni team play. Incredible atmosphere and insane crowd participation. Can’t wait to get to more games.

We spent Sunday in Disneyland. It was packed, a hot day and the weekend makes for super long lines. Fun times though. Their Xmas tree is a little bit bigger than ours.
